As mentioned before, a lot has changed. If you were looking for an individual/family health plan outside of your employer you could do so at any time before 1/1/14. In most cases you could get coverage as soon as the next day after applying. This is no longer true. There are open enrollment periods to obtain individual coverage. The open enrollment period is from November 1st, 2019 through December 15th 2019. However, some people may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. This includes people who may have gotten married, had a baby, got a divorce and lost coverage or you or a family member are losing coverage or expect to lose coverage. There is a 60 day window from the qualifying event to apply.
There are two ways to apply for health coverage:
- Through the Federal Facilitated Marketplace (also known as “On” Exchange). People who apply for coverage also maybe eligible for a premium tax credit. This can help pay for part or all of your medical insurance premiums. If you qualify for a subsidy you may also qualify lower cost sharing (ie, lower copayments, deductibles, out of pocket costs).
- You can apply directly through the insurance company (also known as “Off” Exchange). The insurance companies must offer ACA (Affordable Care Act) compliant plans. FYI, if you apply directly through the insurance company (“Off” Exchange) you will not receive any premium tax credits or lower cost sharing plans, if you are eligible for such credits you must apply “On” Exchange to receive such premium tax credits (see #1 above).
If you need help with obtaining coverage or need answers to questions you may have about your options, I can help you. I am certified to sell the “On” Exchange as well as the “Off” Exchange plans.
I can help you determine if you may qualify for subsidized health plans, what health plans are available that will best suit you and to guide you along on how the enrollment process works.
